Venezuela has released at least 104 political prisoners, the head of the country’s leading human rights organization Foro Penal announced on Monday.

Alfredo Romero, executive director of Foro Penal, said the figure reflects confirmed releases so far and is not final, as the group continues to verify additional cases.

Romero also shared a photo of one of the freed detainees Foro Penal volunteer and lawyer Kennedy Tejeda, who had been imprisoned since August 2024.

Human rights organizations reported that earlier this month, starting from January 8, 156 political prisoners had already been freed across Venezuela as part of a broader release process.

Foro Penal previously estimated the total number of political prisoners in the country at roughly 800–811, including more than 80 foreign nationals.

The releases come amid ongoing pressure on the Venezuelan government and international scrutiny following political unrest and calls for the release of detainees.
