At least 70 people have died after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Mauritania, Gambia’s foreign ministry confirmed late Friday.

The vessel, which left Gambia, was carrying about 150 passengers, mostly Gambian and Senegalese nationals. Officials said only 16 survivors have been rescued.

Mauritanian authorities recovered 70 bodies on Wednesday and Thursday, while more than 30 people remain missing.

Witnesses warn the number of dead could rise beyond 100.

The tragedy shines a light on the lethal risks of the Atlantic migration route, a dangerous passage linking West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands.

It remains one of the riskiest journeys for migrants seeking to reach Europe, with thousands of lives lost in recent years.
