Sweden’s Migration Minister Johan Forssell says that Europe should create a shared system to send Afghans back to Afghanistan if they have deportation orders.
He said that many Afghans who were refused asylum, or who committed crimes in Europe, cannot be deported easily today because they do not have identity documents.
Forssell made these comments during an informal meeting of EU justice and home affairs ministers in Cyprus.
According to him, many Afghan migrants do not have passports or valid travel papers, which makes deportation very difficult under current rules. He said the European Union should find a technical solution to provide documents that allow their return.
“If someone comes to Europe and commits crimes, they have chosen not to be part of our society. Then we must do everything possible to deport them,” Forssell said.
He added that more than half of Afghan asylum requests in Europe are rejected and said those people must be sent back. Forssell suggested joint EU actions, such as collecting deportees from different countries and returning them together on charter flights.
