Gilbert, Arizona

A pro-Palestinian activist was arrested at a Life Time Fitness gym in Gilbert, Arizona, after he refused to leave the premises while wearing a black T-shirt reading “Israel Kills Children… and we pay for it with taxes.”

The incident, captured on video and shared widely online, has reignited debate over political expression in private commercial spaces in the United States.Who Is the Activist?

The man at the center of the incident is Saiaf Abdallah, a Gilbert-area resident and CEO of Tempe-based Voyage Medical, who is widely known online under the username “Resistance is Beautiful.”

He has a documented history of pro-Palestinian activism across Arizona.

What Happened at the Gym?

According to video footage recorded by Abdallah himself, Life Time gym management informed him he had been trespassed because his membership was no longer active.

Abdallah disputed this, contending the real reason was his T-shirt, not his membership status.

“Is the problem the shirt? Or the skin color?” Abdallah asked gym management during the encounter.

He later told police: “They’ve always said, ‘Oh that shirt is offensive’ typical Gilbert white supremacy stuff.”

When he refused to leave, Gilbert police were called and Abdallah was arrested and removed from the premises.

Charges and Legal Context

The arrest was made on a trespassing charge not for the content of the T-shirt itself. No law in Arizona or at the federal level criminalises political slogans on clothing.

The gym, as a private business, retains the right to remove individuals who violate membership terms or management directives, regardless of the reason stated by either party.

The competing accounts management citing an inactive membership, Abdallah citing his shirt have not been independently adjudicated at the time of publication.

Activist’s History of Run-Ins With Law Enforcement

This was not Abdallah’s first arrest tied to his activism. Earlier the same week, he was detained for obstructing a public thoroughfare while wearing the same T-shirt and carrying a Palestinian flag on a makeshift pole.

In 2023, Abdallah was arrested at a pro-Palestinian protest at Arizona State University (ASU) and was subsequently trespassed from ASU property.

He also organised protest actions at Arizona shopping malls and participated in a demonstration inside the office of U.S. Senator Mark Kelly.

Public Response and Fundraising

Following the gym arrest, Abdallah launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal costs and ongoing protest activities. The campaign raised over $11,000 of its $12,000 goal from approximately 250 donors.

The incident drew significant attention on social media, with supporters framing it as a free speech issue and critics pointing to Abdallah’s broader activism record.

Free Speech vs. Private Property: The Legal Distinction

Legal analysts note that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects individuals from government restrictions on speech it does not compel private businesses to permit any form of political expression on their premises.

A gym asking a patron to leave, or calling police when they refuse, falls within standard private property rights under Arizona law.

Whether the membership status or the T-shirt was the operative cause of the removal remains contested and may be subject to further legal proceedings.
