The France Spain wildfires have triggered a major European Union emergency response, with the bloc deploying firefighting aircraft and helicopters from its rescEU reserve as blazes force tens of thousands from their homes.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe stands alongside France Spain Wildfires in the face of the wildfires striking both countries.
She added that five aircraft and two helicopters from the rescEU fleet, the EU’s strategic crisis reserve, are now deployed in France Spain Wildfires, while four aircraft are due to arrive in Spain today.
France Spain Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations
More than 250,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes across France Spain Wildfires and Spain as firefighters struggle to contain the flames.
In Spain specifically, further evacuations on Friday brought the total number of displaced people to more than 70,000, according to Francisco Martín, the Spanish government’s delegate in Madrid.

Beyond aircraft, the EU’s Copernicus satellite service is providing emergency mapping to support the response in both countries.
Assets already on the ground reportedly include two Air Tractor planes based in Portugal, a Black Hawk helicopter from Slovakia, another from the Czech Republic, and a Canadian aircraft from Croatia, deployed mainly around the Gironde region and Nîmes in France.
This response builds on preparations made earlier in the season. The EU had already pre-positioned 777 firefighters from 14 European countries in high-risk areas across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France Spain Wildfires, Spain and Portugal, alongside 22 firefighting airplanes and 5 helicopters kept ready EU-wide the highest level of readiness since the pre-positioning programme began in 2022.
Von der Leyen’s Message to Firefighters
Von der Leyen closed her statement with a message of solidarity. She said her thoughts go to the firefighters bravely battling the flames and to all those who have had to be evacuated.
The EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre, which operates around the clock, is continuing to track fire risk using meteorological data and coordinating additional deployments as needed.
