A large-scale Kyiv missile attack overnight on August 5 killed at least 17 people and injured 44 across the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine’s Air Force said none of the ballistic and cruise Kyiv Missile Attack fired in the assault were intercepted.

The strike targeted logistics and distribution hubs in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, damaging retail warehouses and a railway station and disrupting parts of the country’s consumer supply chain, officials and local reporting said.

What Weapons Were Used in the Kyiv Missile Attack

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russian forces launched 143 aerial weapons in total: four Zircon or Oniks anti-ship Kyiv Missile Attack from Kursk and Rostov oblasts, 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles from Bryansk and Kursk oblasts, and 115 strike and decoy drones, including jet-powered Shahed variants along with Gerbera, Italmas, and Parodiya types.

Ukrainian forces said they shot down or electronically suppressed 98 of the drones.

However, the Air Force reported that none of the 28 missiles were intercepted a detail multiple Ukrainian and international outlets have flagged as unusual given the scale of the barrage.

Ukraine’s Air Defense Gap Raises Questions

The failure to intercept any missiles has drawn attention to strain on Ukraine’s air-defense stockpiles.

Some Ukrainian and Western commentary has linked the gap to interceptor shortages and to Russian efforts to target missile launch sites less effectively than drone threats.

These assessments have not been independently confirmed by Ukraine’s military command and should be treated as analysis rather than official confirmation.

Russian state and military-linked channels claimed the strike targeted military and industrial sites, though this has not been independently verified.
