DANDONG โ North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un crossed the New Yalu River bridge into China on Saturday, using a four-lane crossing that had stood idle for about twelve years, for a one-day visit to the border city of Dandong.
Bridge opened days before the visit
The New Yalu River bridge โ also known as the New Amnok River bridge โ links Dandong in China’s Liaoning province with Sinuiju in North Korea. North Korea finished its side of the structure, and the crossing was inaugurated on 15 October.
The bridge itself had been completed years earlier but left unused, so its opening this month made the route passable for the first time since it was built. That history gave the trip an unusual quality: a leader crossing a span that had been a monument to stalled ties.
Meeting with Wang Huning and a war memorial
In Dandong, Kim met Wang Huning, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Standing Committee and chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference โ one of the most senior posts in China’s leadership.
He also paid his respects at a memorial hall dedicated to the Korean War, laying flowers, and toured the city before heading back to North Korea the same day.
The imagery released from the visit showed Kim walking with Chinese officials past crowds of students waving red flags, with the new bridge in the background.
Timed to the Korean War anniversary
The trip came just before both countries mark the anniversary of Chinese troops entering the Korean War, a date of shared symbolism for the two allies.
It also lands at a delicate moment in regional diplomacy, weeks before an expected visit to China by US President Donald Trump. Both governments have publicly stressed their alignment against what they describe as US pressure, and the visit was presented as a sign of close partnership.
What the crossing signals
For North Korea, the visit is both practical and political. A working road link at Dandong gives Pyongyang a second crossing into its largest trading partner, easing the movement of goods at a border that has been tightly controlled.
For China, hosting Kim days before the Korean War anniversary reinforces a relationship it has long treated as strategic. Analysts will watch whether the reopening of the crossing is followed by a broader increase in trade and exchanges between the two countries.
The visit also serves as a reminder of how quickly the border picture can shift, at a time when other frontier regions have been hardening. SNN News Finland has reported on a US espionage case tied to Taiwan and on wider sanctions pressure in the region.
