An Iranian woman, Kolsoum Akbari, has gone on trial for allegedly murdering 11 of her husbands over a span of 22 years, beginning in 2001, in what is being called one of the most chilling serial murder cases in the country’s recent history.
Official records list Akbari in her late 50s, though relatives of the victims claim she is significantly older. She is facing 11 counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
According to court documents, Akbari is accused of poisoning her husbands to obtain inheritance and dowry payments. In each case, she allegedly demanded financial settlements shortly after their deaths.
The case has attracted widespread media attention, with over 45 plaintiffs, primarily victims’ heirs and relatives, joining the prosecution. In the latest hearing, families of four victims formally requested the death penalty, while the remaining families will present their stance in upcoming sessions.
