Finland’s largest-ever human trafficking trial opened Tuesday at the Lapland District Court in Rovaniemi, with 78 charges of aggravated human trafficking under review.

The case focuses on berry company Polarica Marjahankinta, its former CEO Jukka Kristo, and Thai business associate Kalyakorn “Durian” Phongphit all of whom deny wrongdoing.

The charges stem from allegations by 78 Thai nationals who worked in Finland’s berry-picking sector, each serving as an individual plaintiff. The landmark case is being closely followed for its potential impact on labour practices within Finland’s berry industry.
