Dropped by Drones and Scattered by Rockets: How Ukraine Became One of the World’s Most Mine-Contaminated Countries

Unexploded ordnance from relentless Russian bombardment has littered Ukraine’s landscape, killing hundreds and forcing civilians to avoid roads, forests, and even playgrounds.

In northeastern Ukraine, less than fifty kilometers from the Russian border, lies Shostka—a city once besieged in the early months of the war and still under constant shelling and drone strikes. Even when the attacks cease, an invisible danger will remain: landmines and unexploded ordnance.

According to international estimates, Ukraine has now become one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, with explosive remnants covering nearly a quarter of its territory—an area larger than England.
