The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has warned that anyone selling fake or unlicensed Botox injections could face up to two years in prison and unlimited fines.
The crackdown follows a spate of botulism cases in England, with at least 41 people affected between 4 June and 6 August 2025.
Botulism is an uncommon yet dangerous disease that targets the nervous system and, without treatment, can cause paralysis.
The MHRA said it is stepping up efforts to track down criminals selling illegal botulinum toxin products.
Andy Morling, head of the agency’s criminal enforcement unit, stressed: “Criminals are exploiting the demand for cosmetic treatments by pushing unsafe, unlicensed products and putting lives at risk.”
The watchdog hopes the tougher stance will raise awareness among both sellers and customers about the serious risks and legal consequences of trading in unlicensed cosmetic products.
