Finland, Poland may rewet bogs as defense barrier

Finland and Poland are weighing plans to rewet dried peatbogs and wetlands along their borders as a potential defensive measure against a possible Russian ground offensive.

Officials say restoring the boglands would not only strengthen natural ecosystems but also create difficult terrain for heavy military equipment to cross.

Such landscapes have historically served as effective barriers during conflicts.

Images shared by local authorities highlight stretches of bogs and marshlands on the border, which could be expanded through rewetting projects if the plans move forward.
