U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday pledged to defend Poland and the Baltic states if Russia escalates hostilities in Eastern Europe.

Asked by reporters whether Washington would back EU and NATO members in the region, Trump replied: “Yeah, I would. I would.”

The comments came as Estonia requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council for Monday, following what it described as a serious violation of its sovereignty.

On Friday, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets crossed into Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland.

The move drew strong protests from Estonia, NATO, and the EU, which labeled it a serious provocation. Moscow, however, rejected the accusation.

The latest developments underscore rising tensions between Russia and NATO members along Europe’s eastern flank.
