The ongoing destruction and humanitarian crisis in Gaza are reshaping the global diplomatic landscape. On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal officially recognized the State of Palestine. Several more countries are expected to take similar steps during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In the coming hours, Belgium, France, San Marino, Luxembourg, Malta, and Andorra are likely to announce their recognition as well. Finland and New Zealand have also indicated the possibility of extending recognition in the near future.
The recognition by the United Kingdom and Canada carries particular weight. The UK, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, has veto power, while Canada is the first G7 nation to formally recognize the Palestinian state.
