NATO will convene an emergency meeting on Monday after Estonia invoked Article 4 of the alliance treaty in response to an airspace violation by Russian fighter jets.

According to Estonian officials, three Russian MiG-31 aircraft entered the countryโ€™s airspace over the Gulf of Finland on Friday.

Tallinn condemned the incursion as a serious threat to national security and formally requested consultations under Article 4.

The European Union and NATO both criticized the violation as a dangerous provocation, while Moscow has denied any wrongdoing.

Article 4 allows any NATO member state to call for consultations when it believes its sovereignty or territorial integrity is at risk.

The meeting comes amid heightened concerns over Russiaโ€™s increased military activity along the allianceโ€™s eastern flank.
