NATO will convene an emergency meeting on Monday after Estonia invoked Article 4 of the alliance treaty in response to an airspace violation by Russian fighter jets.

According to Estonian officials, three Russian MiG-31 aircraft entered the country’s airspace over the Gulf of Finland on Friday.

Tallinn condemned the incursion as a serious threat to national security and formally requested consultations under Article 4.

The European Union and NATO both criticized the violation as a dangerous provocation, while Moscow has denied any wrongdoing.

Article 4 allows any NATO member state to call for consultations when it believes its sovereignty or territorial integrity is at risk.

The meeting comes amid heightened concerns over Russia’s increased military activity along the alliance’s eastern flank.
