Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of endangering global security after Kyiv reported that a Russian strike cut electricity to the defunct Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
Zelenskyy warned that Moscow’s continued shelling of Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including facilities tied to nuclear safety, poses a risk beyond Ukraine’s borders.
“Every day that Russia prolongs the war, refuses a full and reliable ceasefire, and continues striking energy facilities – including nuclear power plants – is a global threat,” the president said.
Kyiv confirmed that power to the Chornobyl site, partially destroyed during the 1986 nuclear disaster, was lost on Wednesday after a nearby substation was shelled. Emergency teams are working to restore electricity as concerns mount over nuclear safety in the region.
