Bird enthusiasts across Finland counted more than one million birds last weekend as part of

EuroBirdwatch, Europe’s largest birding event, BirdLife Finland reported.

The barnacle goose was the most frequently observed species, despite the fact that its winter migration had already begun a couple of weeks earlier.

Tens of thousands were recorded in regions such as North Karelia, Kymenlaakso, and Päijät-Häme.

In Orimattila, Päijät-Häme, birders spotted an astonishing 70,000 barnacle geese on Saturday alone.

Large flocks of brambling finches and wood pigeons were also seen nationwide.

Observers also noted rarer species: pied wheatears on Åland’s Lågskär island, Siberian stonechats on Kökar island, and tufted larks in Espoo.

EuroBirdwatch, which monitors autumn bird migration, was held simultaneously in 34 European and Central Asian countries.
