Japan is on the brink of a major political crisis after the ruling coalition between the Liberal
Democratic Party (LDP) and its long-time partner Komeito collapsed following 26 years of cooperation.
Komeito announced its withdrawal after failing to agree with the LDP on stricter controls over
political donations from businesses and public organizations, according to Kyodo News.
The split threatens the election of Japan’s next Prime Minister, as uncertainty grows over who will succeed former LDP leader Shigeru Ishiba.
The coalition had provided parliamentary stability since 1999, with only brief interruptions.
Tensions also flared over the appointment of the new LDP leader, Sanae Takaichi, a hardline conservative known for her anti-immigration
stance. Her political direction alarmed Komeito’s more moderate leadership, led by Tetsuo Saito.
With the alliance dissolved, Japan now faces heightened political instability,
raising doubts about the future direction of its government.
