Germany has called on Hungary to uphold its international obligations by arresting Russian President Vladimir Putin if he enters the country before April 2026.
According to Deutsche Welle, a spokesperson for Germany’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that despite
Hungary’s recent announcement to withdraw from the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) jurisdiction, the move will not take legal effect until April 2026.
“Until that date, Hungary remains bound by ICC regulations and must enforce the arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin,” the ministry representative stated.
The ICC issued the arrest warrant for Putin in March 2023 over alleged war crimes related to the deportation of Ukrainian children.
Earlier today, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that if the planned international summit is held in Budapest, his government will “ensure the conditions for Putin’s entry, stay, and departure.”
Germany’s reminder comes amid growing tension within the
European Union over Hungary’s increasingly close ties with Moscow and its diverging stance on the war in Ukraine.
