At least 35 people were killed in a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria, local authorities confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred after a tanker carrying petroleum overturned and burst into flames on a busy highway.

According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, the explosion spread rapidly, engulfing nearby vehicles and shops. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but several victims were burned beyond recognition.

Officials say that accidents involving fuel tankers are common in Nigeria, where petroleum is mostly transported by road due to the country’s lack of functional pipelines. Experts have repeatedly warned that poor infrastructure and inadequate safety measures continue to put lives at risk.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion and are working to identify the victims.
