Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has sparked outrage after making inflammatory remarks against Saudi Arabia, rejecting any possibility of restoring diplomatic relations if it involves recognizing a Palestinian state.
Speaking to reporters, Smotrich said, “Sovereignty is the real test. If Saudi Arabia asks us to restore relations in exchange for a Palestinian state, then, my friends, excuse me no. Go and ride camels in the Saudi desert.”
His statement drew sharp criticism from regional observers, who labeled the comments as deeply disrespectful and detrimental to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The remarks come amid renewed U.S.-backed discussions aimed at normalizing ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia following the recent Gaza ceasefire. However, Smotrich’s rejection underscores the hardline faction’s resistance within Israel’s ruling coalition toward any concessions to Palestinians.
Analysts say such rhetoric could further strain Israel’s relations with Arab nations and complicate future peace negotiations in the Middle East.
