U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that all trade negotiations with Canada have been officially terminated, accusing Ottawa of circulating a fraudulent political advertisement featuring late President Ronald Reagan criticizing U.S. tariffs.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump expressed anger over what he described as “dishonest tactics,” stating that the advertisement was “fake and disrespectful.”

Earlier this year, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, sparking a retaliatory response from Ottawa. Both nations had been engaged in ongoing discussions to ease tensions and reach a potential agreement on the steel and aluminum sectors.

However, Thursday’s announcement signals a sharp breakdown in diplomatic progress between the two neighbors, potentially reigniting a broader North American trade dispute.

Economic analysts warn that the suspension of trade talks could further strain cross-border industries and impact thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.
