NBI detains several people in Eastern Finland for suspected terrorism financing
Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has detained several individuals in
Ruokolahti, near the Russian border, on suspicion of funding terrorist activities.
According to officials, the arrests took place on Tuesday evening as part of an ongoing
preliminary investigation. Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen confirmed
the detentions but declined to share details, citing the early stage of the probe.
Witnesses reported that five police cars were seen stopping a vehicle near Route 62,
Puumalantie, and taking several people into custody. The location is about eight kilometres
from Ruokolahti’s centre, towards Puumala.
The Finnish government is also planning to toughen penalties for terrorism-related
offences. Currently, financing terrorism can lead to up to eight years in prison, but
proposed laws would further expand the scope and increase punishments.
Since 2007, Finland has recorded only five such cases, making incidents like this extremely rare.
