The Swedish island of Gotland, once known as a peaceful holiday retreat, has now transformed into a strategic
NATO military base, according to Bloomberg. The shift comes as tensions with Russia continue to rise across the Baltic region.
Situated in the center of the Baltic Sea, Gotland occupies a crucial strategic location, controlling key air and sea
routes linking the east and west, including access to Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg.
During the Cold War, Gotland served as a heavily fortified Swedish defense outpost with thousands of troops,
intelligence facilities, and submarine bases. However, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the island was
demilitarized a decision now reversed due to renewed regional threats from Moscow.
Normally, Gotland’s tourist season ends in October, leaving the island quiet for winter. But this year, instead of
tourists, hundreds of military conscripts are stationed there, undergoing intensive training with modern NATO
equipment a clear sign of Sweden’s new defense priorities.
