Iran is facing its worst drought in 100 years, pushing the country toward a major humanitarian crisis. In Tehran, a city of around 10 million people, authorities have started nightly water shutoffs to manage the severe shortage.

The lack of rainfall this spring and summer has caused a dangerous drop in water levels across the country’s reservoirs. President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that if the situation does not improve and rain does not

come by the end of the year, the government may have no choice but to evacuate parts of Tehran.

The capital’s main water source, the Amir Kabir reservoir, is now holding only 8% of its total capacity — enough to last less than two weeks. Meteorologists say this is the most serious water crisis Iran has seen in the past century.
