Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been released from hospital and sent back to prison after three years of medical treatment.

The Penitentiary Service said his health is now “stable” and he no longer needs to stay in the clinic.

Saakashvili is serving a six-year jail term that many human rights groups say is politically motivated. Since his arrest in 2021, he has gone on two hunger strikes and lost a lot of weight.

The former leader says he is a “prisoner of Putin”, claiming Russia is behind his punishment because of his pro-European policies.
