A 22-year-old Russian man, Artyom from Nadym, has lost the ability to walk after consuming energy drinks for eight consecutive years, mostly during late-night online gaming sessions.

Artyom reportedly began with one can a night, eventually increasing to several cans daily often on an empty stomach. He first experienced abdominal pain at age 16, but continued the habit until his body ultimately collapsed.

Doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic necrosis, a life-threatening condition in which the pancreas begins to decay. The damage spread to his liver, spleen, and nervous system.

His mother said the crisis began when he suddenly could not get out of bed because his legs stopped responding.

Artyom is currently in rehabilitation in St. Petersburg, where he is learning to walk again. Doctors warn that recovery could be long and uncertain.

Meanwhile, scientists have raised fresh concerns that taurine, a key ingredient found in most energy drinks, may accelerate the growth of blood cancer cells, highlighting potential broader health risks associated with excessive consumption.
