Finland has deported a Russian national who crossed the border without permission in June. The North Karelia Border Guard confirmed the man, identified as Yevgeny, had previously served in the Wagner private military company.
The individual was apprehended on 17 June in Kitee, after illegally entering Finland via a forested border area. Border sensors triggered an alert, leading a patrol to take him into custody.
Authorities stated that the man applied for international protection in Finland, claiming he was fleeing the war. After his arrest, his military background and ties to Wagner were confirmed. Finnish officials did not provide further details about his service.
Media outlet Yle reported multiple images showing Yevgeny in eastern Ukraine, where he appeared to participate in fighting. He has also posted on social media identifying himself as a Wagner fighter and criticizing Russian military leadership.
The Border Guard released information about the case following public interest and circulating claims regarding his background.
