A shocking case has emerged from Bishkek, where a 20-year-old woman says her parents
tortured her under the pretext of “expelling a jinn,” according to the crisis center Sezim.
The incident took place in late September, but the disturbing details are only now becoming public.
The young woman told investigators that her parents began forcing her to wear a hijab and
became increasingly extreme in their religious views over the past year.
When she refused, they allegedly took her almost daily to a local mullah for so-called “rituals.”
There, she was beaten with a hose and submerged into a barrel of foul-smelling liquid as
part of the supposed exorcism.
She also claims her parents kept her locked at home and confiscated her phone to isolate her.
The case sparked widespread outrage in Kyrgyzstan.
According to Sezim, after counseling sessions and warnings, the parents have now agreed to allow
their daughter to leave the house without a hijab.
