Belgian police have detained former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, during a large-scale anti-fraud operation targeting the European External Action Service (EEAS).
According to initial reports, authorities carried out coordinated raids across multiple EU offices as part of an investigation into suspected financial misconduct.
Mogherini, who served as the EU’s top diplomat from 2014 to 2019, was reportedly taken into custody for questioning as investigators review documents, digital records, and financial transactions linked to the case.
The operation represents one of the most significant anti-corruption crackdowns within EU institutions in recent years.
Officials say the investigation focuses on alleged irregularities involving misuse of funds, procurement violations, and potential influence networks operating inside the EU’s diplomatic structure.
More details are expected as Belgian authorities and EU oversight bodies continue their inquiry into the alleged fraud scheme.
