Sudan has reportedly offered Russia the option to establish a naval base on the Red Sea in exchange for military equipment.

According to the Wall Street Journal, citing senior Sudanese officials, Khartoum suggested that Moscow set up the base in Port Sudan or another strategic coastal location.

Under the proposal, Russia would be permitted to deploy up to 300 personnel and station up to four ships, including nuclear-powered vessels.

If approved, the facility would provide Russia with a strategic vantage point to monitor maritime activity in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal a vital corridor that handles nearly 12% of global trade.

In return for access to the base, Sudan expects Russia to supply air-defense systems and other military equipment at discounted rates.
