Former U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview with Politico that Ukraine was never truly going to be admitted into NATO, claiming that this understanding existed long before Russia’s President Vladimir Putin raised objections.
Trump stated that Western leaders had “always known” Ukraine would not join the alliance. He also claimed that President Volodymyr Zelensky was firm, even blunt, during his early talks with Putin.
According to Trump, Zelensky told the Russian leader:
“I want two things to take back Crimea and to join NATO.”
Trump added, “He didn’t say it very politely. He’s a strong negotiator, a great salesman.”
As part of Trump’s proposed peace plan for ending the Russia–Ukraine war, Ukraine would be required to drop its NATO membership ambitions.
However, Kyiv has repeatedly rejected this idea, saying NATO membership is essential for the country’s long-term security and independence.
The debate continues to highlight the deep political divide between Ukraine’s national interests, Western strategic goals, and Trump’s proposed approach to ending the conflict.
