China is once again increasing military pressure around Taiwan, raising concerns that a full blockade could be getting closer.

China announced it will hold large-scale military drills, called “Just Mission 2025,” around Taiwan on Tuesday, 30 December. This will be the sixth major exercise of this kind since 2022.

According to Reuters, China will deploy ground troops, navy ships, air force aircraft, and missile units during the drills.

The Chinese military said the exercises will focus on air and sea combat readiness, joint command operations, blocking key ports and strategic areas, and showing force from multiple directions.

A map released by China’s military shows five restricted zones around Taiwan, where air and sea traffic will be limited for 10 hours. Analysts say this looks like a practice run for a possible blockade, which could severely disrupt Taiwan.

For the first time, China has openly stated that the drills are meant to deter foreign intervention. This message is not only directed at Taiwan, but also at the United States, Japan, and their allies.

Experts warn that any miscalculation could quickly turn the region into a major international crisis.
