Finnish authorities suspect that a vessel from Russia’s “shadow fleet may have damaged underwater communications cables in the Gulf of Finland and nearby Estonian waters.

The ship, named Fitburg, was found dragging its anchor along the seabed, potentially harming the important infrastructure. The Finnish Coast Guard located the vessel in Finnish waters and has now detained it.

Authorities are investigating the incident and do not rule out the possibility that the ship belongs to Russia’s shadow fleet, although it is not officially listed under international sanctions.

This incident raises concerns about the security of undersea communication cables, which are vital for international data and internet connectivity.
