Helsinki: Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated that the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has long lacked legitimacy, emphasizing that the 2024 elections in Venezuela were grossly unfair.

President Stubb noted that Finland, in line with the European Union, has previously made its position clear on the matter. He added that the EU has already imposed sanctions on Venezuela in response to democratic violations.

Despite this stance, the Finnish president underlined that all states are obligated to respect and comply with international law, stressing that safeguarding this principle is in Finland’s vital national interest and a cornerstone of its foreign policy.

President Stubb further emphasized that the international community must now focus on supporting a transition to a democratic government in Venezuela. He confirmed that Finland is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
