Russian intelligence agents disguised as fishermen and tourists have been uncovered in northern Norway, according to Swedish broadcaster SVT.
The commander of Norway’s Finnmark Division, Jon Olav Fuglem, confirmed that foreign agents had infiltrated the strategically important port city of Kirkenes, close to the Russian border. He warned that Russian intelligence activities and hybrid warfare operations are increasing in the region.
“We see a growing threat, primarily in the form of espionage and intelligence gathering,” Fuglem stated. “Local residents have reported individuals speaking with foreign accents, taking photographs, and lingering near restricted or strategically sensitive locations.”
Norwegian authorities believe the activities are part of broader Russian efforts to monitor military infrastructure and critical assets in the Arctic region. Security agencies are now closely monitoring the situation and increasing surveillance along the border area.
Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, as concerns grow over Russia’s expanding intelligence operations in Nordic countries.
