Reports indicate that a senior Iranian diplomat has left his official position and requested asylum in Switzerland, marking what some observers describe as early signs of diplomatic departures from Iran.
According to Iran International, Alireza Jirani Hokmabad, who was serving at Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, has stepped down from his role. He reportedly joined the mission in 2017 and worked on economic matters within the UN system.
The report states that Hokmabad was appointed Chair of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in April 2025. His decision to seek asylum has not yet been officially confirmed by Swiss or Iranian authorities.
Iran International further claims that several other Iranian diplomats may have applied for asylum in different countries in recent days.
These reports have not been independently verified, and no official statements have been issued by the Iranian government so far.
Analysts note that during periods of heightened political tension, such reports often emerge, though verification from official sources remains essential.
