Al Jazeera Journalist Killed in Airstrike on Al-Bureij Camp

Ahmad Washah, a journalist with Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed after an Israeli airstrike struck his home in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

The attack claimed his life at his residence, with footage from his funeral circulating widely showing his family mourning beside his body.

Sister Speaks at Funeral: ‘He Was a Lion, and More’

At the funeral, Ahmad’s sister delivered an emotional tribute that captured both her grief and her pride in her brother’s work.

“He was a lion, and more. He was a thorn in their side.”

She described Ahmad Washah as a fearless journalist who never shied away from covering the realities of life and war in Gaza.

Ahmad Had Already Lost His Brother A Fellow Al Jazeera Journalist

The loss carries a devastating personal dimension. Just two months earlier, Ahmad had mourned the killing of his brother Ahmad Washah, also a journalist with Al Jazeera, who was similarly killed in the conflict.

Ahmad had carried that grief publicly, continuing his work in Gaza even after losing his sibling.

‘Their Souls Are Intertwined’

Ahmad’s sister reflected on the bond between the two brothers, drawing on the belief that they are now reunited.

“Wanted to be with Mohammed, and Mohammed wanted to be with Ahmad Washah. Their souls are intertwined.”

The words captured a family’s attempt to find meaning in consecutive, irreplaceable losses within weeks of each other.

‘I Won’t Cry. Ahmad Would Not Want Anyone to Cry’

In a moment that drew widespread attention, Ahmad’s sister held back her tears at the funeral, saying her brother would not have wanted mourning.

“I won’t cry. Ahmad Washah would not want anyone to cry. We are all happy today.”

Her composure in the face of profound loss became one of the most widely shared moments from the funeral footage.

Second Al Jazeera Journalist From Same Family Killed in Gaza

The deaths of Ahmad and Mohammed Samir Washah mark a rare and tragic case of two journalists from the same family being killed within the same conflict zone within months of each other.

Al Jazeera has lost multiple journalists covering the Gaza conflict, drawing repeated condemnation from international press freedom organizations including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
