Argentina has approved a major reform to its tax system by passing President Javier Milei’s Principle of Fiscal Innocence Law, marking a significant shift in how taxpayers are treated.

Under the new law, citizens will no longer be automatically considered guilty of tax violations. Instead, the national tax authority ARCA will be required to provide clear evidence of serious financial wrongdoing before taking legal action.

Previously, taxpayers were often forced to explain minor discrepancies in assets or spending, even without proof of misconduct. The new framework reverses that approach, placing the burden of proof on the state rather than the individual.

The government says the reform is designed to reduce tax harassment, protect honest taxpayers, and create a more transparent and fair economic environment.

Officials argue that the change will encourage compliance while restoring trust between citizens and tax authorities, as Argentina continues broader economic reforms under Milei’s administration.
