Australia has recorded its highest-ever consumption of methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin, according to the latest wastewater analysis by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).

The findings reveal that Australians consumed illicit drugs worth an estimated 11.5 billion Australian dollars (about $7.5bn) over the past year — a 34% increase compared to the previous year. Methamphetamine alone accounted for 8.9 billion Australian dollars (around $5.8bn), representing 78% of the total value.

Wastewater analysis — a method that examines sewage water to detect traces of drugs — is considered one of the most reliable tools for gauging national drug consumption. The ACIC report’s data was collected from both capital cities and regional locations, covering approximately 57% of Australia’s population.
