The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has claimed that former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was subjected to an attempted poisoning during his stay in Moscow.

According to sources cited by the group, the attack was aimed at embarrassing the Russian government and blaming it for an assassination attempt. Assad was admitted to a hospital in the outskirts of Moscow but was discharged on Monday morning. His condition is currently said to be stable.

During his treatment, only his brother Maher al-Assad and former presidential chief of staff Mansour Azzam were permitted to visit him.

The report comes shortly after human rights organizations marked the 10th anniversary of Russia’s military intervention in Syria, which, according to SOHR, has resulted in the deaths of 6,993 civilians, including 2,061 children and 984 women, between 2015 and 2024.
