Irish citizens are heading to the polls today to elect their next president, with left-wing independent candidate Catherine Connolly expected to secure a landslide victory, according to the latest opinion polls.

Connolly, known for her outspoken views and grassroots appeal, has energized younger voters across Ireland. She is widely expected to succeed the outgoing President Michael D. Higgins, who has completed two terms in office.

A poll released on Thursday showed Connolly leading with 40% of the vote, compared to 25% for her main rival Heather Humphreys, a former cabinet minister. When adjusted for undecided voters and those likely to spoil their ballots, Connolly’s lead grew to 55% versus 35%.

Analysts predict a record-low turnout, raising concerns that voter apathy and spoiled ballots could impact the final results. However, Connolly’s campaign has maintained strong momentum, emphasizing social equality, political transparency, and climate action as central themes.

Voting will close this evening, with the official results expected to be announced over the weekend.
