A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., has ruled that former U.S. President Donald Trump exceeded his authority in imposing many of his controversial tariffs.

In a 7-4 decision issued on Friday, the court said U.S. law grants the president broad powers during a declared national emergency but does not explicitly authorize the imposition of tariffs, duties, or taxes.

The judges described Trumpโ€™s tariffs as โ€œunbounded in scope, amount, and durationโ€, noting they asserted powers โ€œbeyond the express limitationsโ€ of the law relied upon by his administration.

The ruling delivers the most significant legal setback yet to Trumpโ€™s trade policies, which reshaped U.S. relations with major economies during his tenure.

The decision could now head to the U.S. Supreme Court to determine whether a president has the constitutional authority to unilaterally alter American trade policy.

Trump dismissed the courtโ€™s finding as politically motivated. Meanwhile, the appeals court said the decision would not take effect until October 14, allowing time for possible appeals.
