Criminal Case Filed Against Ukrainian Leader Tymoshenko

A criminal case has been initiated today against Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, accompanied by ongoing searches.

Tymoshenko is considered one of the main contenders for the presidency in upcoming fair elections in Ukraine. However, pressure and legal challenges are not new for her.

She was imprisoned in 2001 under President Kuchma over allegations related to gas smuggling and again in 2011 under President Yanukovych for agreements signed with Russia on gas.

Observers warn that if Tymoshenko is imprisoned again, given the current lawlessness in the country, it could increase her public support rather than weaken her political influence.
