British swimmer Rob Hoey was swimming calmly with his young daughter near New Zealand’s North Island when something unusual happened in the water.
Suddenly, a group of dolphins appeared and began swimming in a tight circle around them. The dolphins gently pushed Rob and his daughter toward the center. Whenever Rob tried to swim away, two dolphins guided him back, as if they were protecting them from danger.
Soon, the reason became clear. A great white shark, almost three meters long, was moving close to the area.
The dolphins immediately changed their behavior. They slapped the water with their tails, swam fast in organized movements, and formed a strong barrier between the swimmers and the shark. Their actions appeared to scare the shark and force it away.
For nearly 40 minutes, the dolphins stayed around Rob and his daughter, refusing to let them leave. Only after the shark swam away did the dolphins open the circle and allow the two swimmers to safely return to shore.
The incident was seen by a lifeguard and several people on the beach. This event adds to many reports showing that dolphins sometimes display strong protective instincts and have helped humans during shark encounters.
