Estonia to Auction Cars Abandoned at Russian Border

Tallinn: Estonia has announced new measures to deal with vehicles abandoned near the Russian border. According to ERR reports, cars left for more than 72 hours in the free parking area at the Koidula border crossing will now be towed away by authorities.

Officials stated that once a vehicle is evacuated, the owner has 30 days to claim it. If no claim is made within this time, the car may be put up for auction.

The step aims to address a growing problem of abandoned vehicles piling up in the border zone, creating difficulties for both border security and travelers. Authorities said the auctions will also generate some revenue, which could be used to cover towing and storage costs.

The Koidula crossing is one of the busiest entry points between Estonia and Russia, and officials hope this policy will discourage long-term parking and misuse of the free parking facilities.

Observers believe this move reflects Estonia’s broader efforts to tighten border management amid rising tensions in the region.
