Estonia has announced that its military expenditure will rise to 5.4% of GDP next year. This will be the highest defence spending level in the entire NATO alliance.

Estonia says the increase is important for national security and for supporting regional defence in the Baltic area. The country believes that stronger military preparedness is necessary due to rising tensions in Europe.

NATO has long encouraged member states to spend at least 2% of GDP on defence, but Estonia’s new level goes far beyond that target.
