Slovak Member of the European Parliament Erik Kaliňák, an EU Lawmaker, has warned about growing security risks in Yemen and the potential impact on international maritime trade in the Red Sea.

Speaking in the European Parliament, Kaliňák said the situation has worsened after the United Arab Emirates withdrew its counter-terrorism forces from southern Yemen.

He warned that the Houthis are rapidly moving in to fill the security gap, increasing the risk of attacks on commercial vessels and threatening global supply chains.

Kaliňák also noted that Al-Qaeda remains active in the region. He said the group had previously been largely defeated by the Southern Transitional Council with support from the UAE, but current instability could allow the group to reorganize and return.

He stressed that renewed violence in the region could once again disrupt key shipping routes and pose serious risks to global trade.
