Finland has recorded its coldest temperature of the current winter season, with the mercury plunging to an extreme -42.8 degrees Celsius in the northern region of Lapland.
According to Finnish meteorological data, the record-low temperature was measured early Friday morning at a weather station in Savukoski, a municipality located in Finnish Lapland. This reading surpassed the previous winter low of -41.4°C, which was registered at the same station just a day earlier.
Meteorologists say the severe cold spell is expected to persist through the weekend. Lapland is likely to experience temperatures hovering around -40°C, while southern and central parts of Finland may see lows reaching -20°C.
Yle meteorologist Anniina Valtonen stated that the icy conditions are a result of clear skies and calm winds, which have allowed temperatures to drop sharply. However, some relief is expected by Sunday, as increasing cloud cover is forecast to gradually ease the extreme cold.
Authorities have advised residents, particularly in northern regions, to take precautions due to the dangerously low temperatures, which pose risks to health, transportation, and infrastructure.
