Finland’s Defence Minister held a significant bilateral meeting with United States Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll in the city of Mikkeli,Driscoll Finland, according to a statement reported by Abida Kahlun, Bureau Chief Helsinki for SNN News Finland.

The meeting covered a broad range of defence and security topics reflecting the increasingly close military relationship between Helsinki and Washington.

Bilateral Defence Cooperation at the Centre of Talks

The two officials discussed the current state and future direction of Finland-US bilateral defence cooperation, which both sides described as stronger than at any previous point.

Specific areas of discussion included participation in joint military training programs and multinational exercises under the NATO framework.

The meeting also addressed current NATO-related issues and the broader security situation in Finland’s neighbouring areas a direct reference to the ongoing strategic tension along Finland’s eastern border with Russia.

Finland, which formally joined NATO in April 2023, has since emerged as one of the alliance’s most strategically positioned members given its 1,340-kilometre shared border with Russia.
